VELP Scientifica 의 BOD 측정 장비는 미생물의 호흡을 직접적으로 측정하는 기술 (respirometric technique) 을 기반으로 한다.
미생물들은 산소 (O2) 를 소비하고 이산화탄소 (CO2) 를 배출한다.
유기물질이 분해되면 미생물들은 이 분해되는 물질로 부터 에너지를 얻게되는데 이에 의해 물질이 산화된다.
미생물에 의한 산소소비에 의해 용기내에 미세한 압력의 변화가 일어나는데 이 압력의 변화를 측정하여 BOD 값을 측정하게 된다.
용기내에서 발생하는 이산화탄소는 용기상부에 위치한 강력한 알칼리 성분에 의해 흡수되어 없어진다.
측정원리는 BOD 반응 초기에 용기내 산소 농도를 측정하고 일정기간이 지난 후의 용기내 산소 농도를 측정하여
이 산소농도의 차이를 BOD 값으로 환산하여 BOS Sensor 에 나타내게 된다.
이 원리를 이용한 BOD 측정 과정은 다음과 같이 매우 간단하다. |

Add the stirring bar into the dark glass bottle; then fill it with enough sample, according to the following table:

Higher values can be measured by diluting the sample.
Position the CO2 absorber, filled with specific reagent, e.g. soda lime (sodium calcium hydrate, 20% about carbon dioxide absorption capacity) or potassium hydroxide.

Incubate the sample at 20 °C for as many days as desired, including BOD5, BOD7 and BODultimate.
Plug the mains cable in the dedicated socket inside the incubator and in approx. 30-40 minutes the sample will reach the operating temperature. |

Screw the BOD Sensor on. |

Microorganisms start their activity: oxygen (O2) is consumed and the carbon dioxide (CO2) generated is collected by the dedicated absorber. |

The sensor measures the internal pressure decrease and directly shows on the display the BOD value, in mg/l (or ppm), with no need for further calculation. Results are automatically stored in the BOD Sensor. |
